EastEuro Link hosted its 5th Annual Central and East European Telecom Conference on 31st January and 1st February in Bucharest, Romania. The event was a tremendous opportunity to enhance understanding of recent developments in CEE telecoms with a structured focus on regulations, finance and technology that encompasses the most essential aspects of a constantly evolving industry. Taking place in the five star venue in the beautiful Romanian capital, the event was attended by a range of investors, operators, advisors, service and technology providers.

 

Dr. Karim Taga, Managing Director in the Vienna office of Arthur D. Little’s German, Austrian and CEE operations, introduced the conference and chaired the event excellently throughout the 1st conference day. He evaluated the outstanding achievements of the operators in CEE countries also presenting regional operators case studies. Mr. Andrzej Binkowski, CEO of Dlugie Rozmowy then spoke about the impact and potential of VoIP, explaining how VoIP can stop broadband price deterioration and help reduce churn and increase margins.
This was followed by a presentation on current telecoms regulations and future developments by Mr.Roland Belfin of Austrian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.

 

After a networking coffee break, Mr. Dieter Angerer, Country Director of Nokia Siemens Networks Romania, launched the discussion on business transformation as the key driver of the evolving telco industry. Then Mr. levente Csenteri, Executive Director of Combridge SRL gave a speech on maximising wholesale profitability and Mr. Petru Fuiorea, Manager, Romtelecom SA, focused on changing IP business model, giving the reasons of need for modifications. This session was concluded with an inspiring presentation given by Mr. Francois Remael, Director of Content Division of Telekomunikacja Polska, on the future of telecommunication operators in the area of content.

Following a lively lunch break where delegates had the opportunity to network, Mr. Kuren Shaknazarov, Business Development Director of Martin Dawes Systems spoke about fixed-mobile convergence. Mr. Dave Bilimoria, Senior Director of Oracle Corporation, then gave an overview of the principle challenges of the CEE telecom industry focusing on the impact of the regulatory changes, disruptive technology innovation and competitive landscape. This was followed by a lively discussion and Mr. Joerg Deibert’s presentation on successful deployment of VoIP solutions in International Carriers Sonus Networks. Talking about rapid deployment and development of broadband, as well as content digitalisation, Mr. Razvan Pirvu, Marketing and Strategy Manager of Ericsson, Romania and Moldova, said that operators were looking into strategies to become convergent players.  
To close conference day one, Mr. Dan Georgescu, President of ANRCTI provoked discussion among conference attendees presenting telecom regulatory strategy in Romania.



 

Mr. Dirk Verchuijl of Arthur D. Little, TIME, opened and successfully chaired the event on the second conference day. He also gave an interesting presentation on convergence.
The session on Market developments in the CEE internet sector included the presentation of Mr. Josef Trimmel, Head of Wholesale of Telecom Austria who spoke about internet usage and the expansion of broadband, followed by Dr. Andrew Hudson, Business Development Executive of Vodafone Group Strategy focusing on built-in broadband wireless access and critical challenges ahead in this area.
Mr. Gael Derven, Head of Solutions Marketing, Converged IP Communications of Comverse gave presentation on creating differentiation and profitability on the consumer market through converged communication, FMC and multi-play services and Mr. Leszek Bujak, Business Development Manager CEE, SES ASTRA S.A. examined the potential of satellite based broadband internet and VoIP for the residential market. The participants were also offered opportunity to learn more about the successful launch and development of a nation wide WiMax network in Bulgaria through the presentation given by Mr. Plamen Vutov, Chief Marketing Officer of Max Telecom.
Talking about private equity and telecom, Mr. Siddhart Patel, Senior Principal at APAX Partners provoked live discussion among the participants. Approaching the end of this important regional event, the final conference session brought two presentations on telecoms management and competitiveness, with Mr. Andrej Mihevc, Telecommunications Director of DARS who evaluated the infrastructure competition and Mr. Yoram Leshem, Sales Director of Allot Communications who spoke about maintaining growth and quality of experience, identifying the most profitable services and managing network to guarantee customer satisfaction and retention.

 
 

The event brought together a number of influential players in Telecom industry to engage in numerous discussions and listen to some excellent insights into the field.
